Developed a little more than a hundred years ago, Einstein's Theory of Relativity is a groundbreaking scientific breakthrough that revolutionized our understanding of space and time. How are space and time intertwined? What happens at high speeds or strong gravitational fields? What are black holes? What types of black holes are there?
This course will focus on the geometry of spacetime and will be split into two parts: In the first part, the course will cover Special Relativity. In the second part, students will explore the fundamental ideas of General Relativity, emphasizing the nature of spacetime around black holes. Besides mastering the mathematical tools used in Relativity, students will develop physical intuition of the new ideas. Students will engage via interactive discussions, a large set of out-of-class materials, and daily problem solving sessions.
