Writing Systems of the World

This course will survey the main types of writing systems by exploring specific examples (e.g., Akkadian Cuneiform, Hebrew, Sanskrit, Greek, and Korean) of the written form. What is the relationship between symbol and sound? What are the different ways that we can represent speech, and how have those ways succeeded and failed? Students may also explore some writing systems that do not represent speech, such as numbers, musical notation, and computer code.
