Quantum Computing

Quantum computing, leveraging quantum mechanics to make particular computational algorithms faster, is a rapidly growing field. In the past year there has been a growing demand to educate the next generation "quantum workforce." This course is intended as an elementary introduction to the field of quantum computing. Just enough quantum mechanics and mathematics will be introduced to lay a conceptual framework and provide a sophisticated understanding of what the promise, and the hype, quantum computers may provide. Different quantum circuit simulators will be utilized to construct the core quantum algorithms and to run simple problems on an actual quantum computer.

*The course will meet for two hours daily (Monday–Friday) for a live online class during this window of time. The third hour is used for online office hours. Students will be admitted to and attend just one course section and time. The exact course time and office hour schedule will be set closer to the start of the program. In addition to the live meeting times, students complete out-of-class learning assignments such as assigned readings, group work, pre-recorded online lectures, and more.

Prerequisite(s)

Students should be familiar with the basics of vectors and trigonometry. Knowledge of probability, complex numbers, and matrices is useful but not required. Required mathematics will be introduced in the course.
