Restoration Ecology

This course will introduce students to the discipline of Restoration Ecology and explore project planning on the applied side of restoration. Students will learn the basic tenets of restoration ecology and form groups to develop plans, and built-in experiments, for various real-life restoration projects. For example, we can explore how to re-build salt marshes after an oil spill, how to build up oyster reefs off the shore of New York City, or how to reforest old farm fields in the conservation reserve program. Most importantly, this course will address how to learn while doing restoration. A combination of theory and general topics will be discussed when instructional time begins, followed by mapping and project work in teams.
