The biosciences are a continually evolving discipline and advances in research have been instrumental in coming together to develop medical treatments. Covid-19 has brought a spotlight to human health issues. We will approach biosciences with an understanding that to advance areas in the biosciences we must understand the basic principles. For example, the fundamentals of air exchange and partial pressures is critical to understand the processes of oxygenation of blood in the lungs. Applying these principles can lead to the development of ventilators. In biology, the central tenet is the process of transcribing DNA into RNA and translating RNA into protein. Building on that principle, we will conceptualize how mRNA can be used as a vaccine. With this approach, we will survey various topics, including the action potential, neural connections and how these were applied to electrical conduction and pacemakers in the heart or to neural connections that lead to brain-machine interfaces. The class is a mixture of in-home lab exercises, teaching and problem-based learning in groups. Students work in groups to seek out fundamental processes and use that knowledge to develop a medical device, a new technology for diagnosis or to understand a medical treatment.

*The course will meet for two hours daily (Monday–Friday) for a live class during this window of time. The exact time will be set closer to the program start. In addition to the live meeting times, students will engage in out-of-class learning assignments such as assigned readings, group work, pre-recorded online lectures, and more.
