Why College? Imagining Your Education

“Why College?” will prompt you to explore how you imagine your college education. We will discuss the history, practice, and the reasoning behind college education by putting canonical texts in conversation with contemporary works in many areas of study— STEM, arts, humanities, and the social sciences. We will discuss the ways in which these areas of study relate to your future careers and your life more generally. You will contemplate on your life path, question how and why you make decisions, and practice constructing arguments for your viewpoints, while respecting the views of others. This course will be a collective and collaborative process—an attempt to discover the purpose of education through class discussions and group activities.  Our focus is not so much on the answers, but on the questions: What kind of education do you imagine for yourself? How does that imagination relate to what kind of life you want to live? Join us to explore what others have said about these big questions and begin to answer these questions for yourself.
