This course introduces students to the craft of writing poetry through poems concerned with place. By reading poetry and texts characterized by their place, students will learn how poets world-build within a book or a series of poems. “Place” could be the poet's conceptual "home," a town or city, or ancestral homeland; it can be interpreted as travel, the interior longing for a place, or displacement. In a supportive classroom community, students establish a writing practice and learn how to share poems with their peers. Through daily practice, students will improve their reading and writing skills, increase their understanding of poetic language, and improve their analysis of their own writing.
