The Fundamentals of Augmented Reality (AR)

This course is a survey on the emerging media of Augmented Reality (AR). AR is a new form of human-computer interaction that enhances the world around us and merges digital and physical experiences. A pioneering form of media, AR is utilized in the design, medical, and entertainment industries. AR allows us to communicate in a new form of media that adds layers of interaction, real-time information, and a unique perspective to our physical world. This course aims for students to understand the possibilities of computer interaction through digital media applications. Through guided tutorials, group projects, and individual assignments, students will build an essential skill set for creating AR experiences and understanding the possible applications of the medium. After taking “Fundamentals of AR,” students will be versed in a medium that combines 3D modeling, computer animation, computer vision, interaction design, and immersive storytelling.

*The course will meet for two hours daily (Monday–Friday) for a live online class during this window of time. The third hour is used for online office hours. Students will be admitted to and attend just one course section and time. The exact course time and office hour schedule will be set closer to the start of the program. In addition to the live meeting times, students complete out-of-class learning assignments such as assigned readings, group work, pre-recorded online lectures, and more.

Prerequisite(s)

Experience editing photos and videos with software and smartphones. Beginning coding experience is helpful but not required.

Required hardware: A hard drive or portable storage drive with at least 32 GB of free space, and a smartphone or tablet.
