Introduction to Ethnic Studies

The field of ethnic studies emerged from student groups' commitment to enacting social change. In this introductory course, students will have the opportunity to cultivate a language and understanding around the principles, methods, and practices that inform the field of ethnic studies and movements towards justice. Students will be tasked with placing their own knowledge, disciplinary interests (i.e. computer science, sociology, law, art), and experiences in conversation with ethnic studies scholarship to conceptualize a world rooted in justice, equity, liberation, and belonging. Together, students will draw upon interdisciplinary texts, class discussions, educational videos, multimedia lectures, community-based research methodologies, journal reflections, and creative group projects so that students can become familiar with college-level approaches to ethnic studies, and begin to think about their own role in enacting social change.
