Introduction to Foreign Policy

States follow different approaches when it comes to interacting with their partners and enemies. These differences in foreign policy are evident when observing how countries, like the United States of America, pursue international relations in different parts of the world. This course analyzes foreign policy in this context and unpacks the different forces that enable the dominant U.S. position in global affairs. To do so, we will examine what we mean when we say “foreign policy”, discuss the key drivers of foreign policy, as well as the constraints. Through group discussions, small group activities, in-class readings, and a class debate, students are introduced to a framework for analyzing foreign policy. Students should be prepared to approach topics and discussions with respect for diverse viewpoints, fostering an inclusive classroom learning community.
