Biomedical sciences encompass a vast array of subject matter in biology, anatomy, physiology, and many other related fields of study. A strong foundation in these areas will prepare students to develop a successful career in a wide variety of fields, including medicine, pharmaceuticals, biomedical engineering, epidemiology, and more. The COVID-19 pandemic is an example of how the concepts covered in this course can be applied in real-world scenarios. Students will explore how gas exchange occurs in the lungs, the response of our heart and blood vessels to changes in oxygenation, how genetic material turns into proteins, and the relationship between mRNA and vaccine development. This course exposes students to some of the most important epidemiologic and clinical research methods that make up the foundation of research in human subjects. Students will engage with live lectures, asynchronous assignments, small group learning activities, and a group project.

Session Two
*The course will meet for two hours daily (Monday–Friday) for a live online class during this window of time. The third hour is used for online office hours. Students will be admitted to and attend just one course section and time. The exact course time and office hour schedule will be set closer to the start of the program. In addition to the live meeting times, students complete out-of-class learning assignments such as assigned readings, group work, pre-recorded online lectures, and more.
