Public historians do much more than memorize names and dates. Historians use popular visual and auditory mediums to recreate the past in a manner that aims to be intriguing and educational. Through a close examination of film, memorials, graphic novels, museum exhibits, and podcasts, this course will consider the ways in which historians disseminate research about World War II to broad public audiences. When an account is complex, or even contested, historians aim to find a consensus that maintains the nuance and integrity of the historical narrative. Students will gain firsthand experience researching and creating their own public history project focused on the people, places, and events that shaped World War II.
