Nations follow different approaches when it comes to interacting with their allies and opponents. Variations in foreign policy are evident when observing how countries like the United States of America pursue international relations in multiple regions of the world. This course analyzes foreign policy in this context and unpacks the different forces that enable the dominant U.S. position in global affairs. To do so, we will examine what we mean when we use the term “foreign policy”, and discuss the key drivers and constraints of international relations. Through group discussions, small group activities, in-class readings, and a class debate, students are introduced to a framework for analyzing foreign policy and international relations. Students should plan to approach topics and discussions with respect for diverse viewpoints, fostering an inclusive classroom learning community.
