at the time of application

Explore the cutting-edge intersection of biology, technology, and scientific innovations through biotechnology. This multidisciplinary field integrates biological sciences and engineering to harness living systems. Biotechnology helps create products and services to solve problems and enhance the quality of life. This course is centered on the applications of molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, and bioinformatics, with focus in the areas of medicine, agriculture, environmental science, and clinical and industrial sectors. Students will learn lab–based methods used to study the biochemical processes and substances present in living systems. Analyzing genetic engineering techniques, students will evaluate the ethical implications of biotechnical research. By the end of this course, students will develop critical scientific skills, research skills, and an understanding of how biological systems can be manipulated for practical applications.

Live Meeting Time*

04:00 PM - 07:00 PM (PDT)

Session One

*The course will meet for two hours daily (Monday–Friday) for a live online class during this window of time. The third hour is used for online office hours. Students will be admitted to and attend just one course section and time. The exact course time and office hour schedule will be set closer to the start of the program.

Asynchronous Homework Time

1-2 HOURS PER DAY

The approximate amount of time participants should plan to spend on assignments and projects outside of live class time.

Prerequisite(s)

Completion of a high school biology course.
