Why do some people live longer and healthier lives than others? This course tackles this essential question by exploring Social Determinants of Health, which are the conditions in our homes, schools, workplaces, and communities that fundamentally shapes our well-being. Understanding social determinants of health is essential for students considering careers in medicine, public policy, social work, or non-profit leadership, as it provides a critical lens for understanding health inequality and systemic solutions. Throughout the class, students will engage in case studies, analyze local community data, and learn the essential public health framework used by professionals. The course will culminate with a community advocacy project, where students will propose a policy or intervention to address a local health challenge and present their findings and recommendations to the class, simulating a real-world briefing for community stakeholders. This course is an introduction to college-level critical thinking and research, preparing students to become informed, solution-oriented leaders in their future professions.
